Type Locality and Naming

Hon Trcm Cape, Hon Chong Harbour, Ha Tien coastal area (E = 10°11'; E = 104°31'). The name of the formation is that of an island belonging to the Ba Lua Archipelago, Gulf of Thailand, Kien Giang Province.

Synonym: Fm de Hon Heo: Fontaine H. 1969 (Antépermien). Hệ tầng Nam Du (part.): Nguyễn Kinh Quốc eial. 1981; Vũ Khúc, Bùi Phú Mỹ et al. 1990 (Silurian - Devonian). Lithology and Thickness

Organic-rich claystone: Black, carbonaceous shale with interbed thickncss varying from 10 to 20 cm, containing many spores. The total thickness of the formation in this section is 450 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Upper contact

It has unclear or tectonic contact with other formations. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Ha Tiem Fm of Early Permian age.

Regional extent

In the part of the scction situated near the Hon Trem Cape almost all the beds dip 60-75°, plunging southeastwards. In the part of the scction extending from the Doi Xanh Hotel to Hon Chong Harbour the attitude of the beds changes continuously, plunging mainly southeastwards and northwestwards; and in the last part of the section the beds plunge northwestwards with the dip changing from 25 to 75°, locally up to nearly 90°.

Age

The Hon Heo Fm is supposedly referred to the Devonian. Due to inadequate study of Paleozoic spores in Viet Nam, the beds on the other side of the Hon Heo Fm are strongly folded and could contain intercalations of a younger formation, the dating of the Hon Heo Fm is still disputed. At present, the Hon Heo Fm is supposedly referred to the Devonian. [Assigned here as only early Devonian, which is the age of the Devonian preserved in Middle Trung Bo .
